Leiyu was inspired by the CoH costume "coolie hat" and entirely too many "Big Trouble In Little China" shows as a kid. The character stagnated over the years- the lack of a good cheongsam made it tough to get the look I wanted, but near the end of the game, several variations came to life.
In-Game Bio
Not much is known about the heroine Leiyu except for the contradictions. She battles the Tsoo, but emulates many of their traditions. She exhibits merciless rage one moment, and soft compassion a moment later. She often enters battle with a thunderous explosion, but rarely speaks. The most likely phrase you'll ever hear from her is a raspy whisper that's both a command and a warning, "Stay away."
RP Hooks
- Those with mage sight can detect the presence of a powerful artifact worn as a necklace. They may also detect signs of spirit possession.
- PPD intel is torn on whether her "tsoo" focus is heroically-driven or possibly internal power struggle.
- Those that do get her to speak more will catch a elements of an accent but not from anything asian. (If they're really good, its Scouse- she's from the Liverpool area)
- she comes from a family deeply embedded in a crime syndicate
- she feels compelled to battle that syndicate
- the ancient amulet she wears is the source of her electrical/lightning powers. It also houses an ancient angry and vengeful spirit/ancestor that's capable of not-so-subtle influences to her demeanor.
- many have worn the amulet before her and fallen in battle.
She's actually not well versed in the traditions of her heritage- it's the ancestor spirit that dictates her battle garb- going so far as melting or frying accessories she's tried to add, like kevlar. It's a traditioanlist. She is not.
In fact, although from one of the IP families, she grew up in Liverpool's chinatown. One reason for her silence is that her accent would quickly give away her true identity.
I'd always imagined her as an electricity blaster, but I reimagined her as a staff/electric armor brute on Virtue. The idea was that she used the staff not just to attack enemies, but to keep them away from the ancestor spirit's raging electricity. Now she's back as an electric-electric sentinel.
